If one intends to obtain a residence permit for being a family member of a non-EU citizen legally staying in or moving to Italy, there are 3 alternative scenarios.

A)

For those who are currently in their home country and need a visa to enter the Schengen area, it is necessary to apply for the so-called family reunification.

B)

For those who are already in Italy with (a) another residence permit issued for reasons other than family, (b) a Tourist Visa, or (c) a passport that allows them visa-free entry into the Schengen area, it is possible to apply for so-called family cohesion.

C)

For those who are abroad together with their family member who is a non-EU citizen − and has already obtained or is in the process of obtaining a visa for work, investment, study or religious reasons − it is possible to apply for a visa as an accompanying family member to be allowed to enter Italy jointly.
